entry no. 09

the people you become in different rooms.

i've noticed that i'm slightly different in every room i walk into. not fake — just responsive. there's a version of me that's loudest with the people who've known me longest, who can finish my sentences and laugh before i reach the punchline. a version that's quieter and more careful with people i'm still figuring out. a version that's unexpectedly tender with strangers who are clearly having a hard day.

for a long time i thought this meant i was inconsistent. that there was something unstable about shifting. but i think now it's just that people are not fixed points. we're in conversation with our environments, with the energy in the room, with the people who are present. the core stays the same. the values, the humour, the things i won't compromise on. but the expression of those things changes shape depending on where i am and who i'm with. that's not dishonesty. that's just being alive and paying attention.
